Dining with Skyler

Itinerary: Cape Town, South Africa

What an extraordinary place. Cape Town is full of character: it’s beachy, it’s metropolitan, it’s traditional and it’s modern. There’s so much to do and so many natural wonders surrounding this amazing city. Here’s a video so you can paint the full picture of everything I’m about to tell you.

Where I Stayed

Ellerman House

  • The nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in
  • Villa experience
  • Private chef
  • Delicious food
  • Outstanding service
  • Beautiful accommodations
  • Feels like home away from home
  • The Kardashians stayed here and slept in the same room as me

Where I ate

Private dinner in Ellerman House, Villa One

If you stay in the Ellerman House villas, having a private chef dinner is considered a must. And it was a must. Our chef came up with a magnificent menu for us and honestly, it was so awesome to eat these gourmet dishes while wearing sweatpants.

La Colombe

This place is a bit of a trek (about an hour from the city) and has its own vineyard. If you’re into tasting menus and special surprises, this is the spot for you. Each dish is small, yet flavorful, and comes with its own kind of interactive experience. For example, our tuna tartare came in a “tuna can” and the waiter comes with a large set of knives for you to choose your “special knife” in the middle of the course. They also collect you and your party mid-meal to bring you to a secret “enchanted garden” in the corner of the restaurant where they serve you a glass of wine and one of your courses.

Potluck Club

This place is cool and one of the trendiest spots in Cape Town. It’s laid back with a tapas style menu, which is really really delicious. Everything we had here was lights out and I recommend coming here on a date, with your friends or family. This is the spot for all occasions. Just make sure you make a reservation!

Codfather

How catchy! (See what I did there) Aside from its fresh name, Codfather’s got some freeeshh fish and sushi. Basically, how it works is you either order from the turntable sushi menu or you select your fish from their fresh fish counter and then tell them how you want it prepared. Codfather is super laid back and great after a beach day at Camp’s Bay Beach.

Where I Went

I’m usually not a typical tourist, but if you’re in Cape Town, tourist attractions are a must. That’s because the tourist attractions here are exquisite natural wonders, such as mountains or beaches with penguins roaming around. There’s so much to do and see, but here’s where I went.

Table Mountain

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain overlooking the city of Cape Town. It’s beautiful.

Robben Island

This is a place everyone should visit. For those of you that don’t know, Robben Island is an island off of Cape Town that was used as a prison, military base and hospital for socially unacceptable groups between the 17th and 20th centuries. Nelson Mandela was one of the famous prisoners held there before his presidency, and you get to see his cell. You also get to see the cells of several other prisoners, the camp grounds and inside the old facilities. On top of that, former prisoners give you the tour to really put things in perspective. It’s a very moving experience.

Cape of Good Hope

This is a beautiful peninsula overlooking where the Atlantic meets the Indian ocean. It’s the windiest place I’ve ever been.

Boulders Beach

Imagine a beach full of sweet, waddling penguins. This is a real place.

Wine Country

I recommend having a tour guide drive you Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach and wine vineyards all in the same day. They’re outside of Cape Town and you can make stops at each one, saving the vineyards for last so you can get a little tipsy for the ride back.

Camp’s Bay Beach

I visited Cape Town during South African winter, so I’m not really up to speed on the beaches. However, I did stop by Camp’s Bay, and it was a beautiful beach town with cute restaurants and boutiques.

Bo Kaap

Bo Kaap is an area of Cape Town that is formerly known as the Malay Quarter. The streets are painted rainbow with brightly colored houses and shops.
